Lot description

Large folio: 40 pp.; 41 pl. mounted on stubs.

Contemp. calf, covers with gilt-ruled decorative border frame and corner pieces, richly gilt-orn. spine with raised bands, gilt inside dent., a.e.g. (rubbed, corners bumped, a few sm. def.). Very good copy.

First edition of this impressive work showing the funeral procession of William IV, Prince of Orange (1711-1751) on 4 February 1752. Ill. with 41 large double-page pl. engr. by J. Punt after drawings by P. van Cuyck, with captions in Dutch, English and French. They show the participants of the funeral procession in ceremonial costume. The last 3 pl. show the arms of the Dutch Republic, the coffin of William IV and the hearse, the groundplan of the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft and the Market Square. Engr. armorial mark on title. List of subscribers bound at the end, signed by P. Gosse jr.
