Lot description

2 parts in 1 vol., 8vo: [32]-378-[6] pp. (some stains in 2nd part).

Modern jansenist brown morocco, spine on 5 raised bands (sl. rubbed), inner gilt dentelle, gilt-ruled sides, gilt top. Good copy.

Rare 1st edition of the translation by Jean Bachou (fl. 17th c.), Lyon mathematician and alchemist, of "Enchiridion physicae restitutae" (1623) by J. d'Espagnet (1564-163?), alchemist, lawyer and counsellor at the Parlement of Bordeaux. Ill. with a diagram p. 376. The 2nd part has a separate title but no separate pagination; the dedication to Pierre du Broc is signed by J. Bachou. "The first tract was the first treatise to be written in France in opposition to the physics of Aristotle. The second contains details regarding the preparation and properties of the Philosopher's stone" (Duveen). "Excellents traités" (Caillet). Ref.
