Very rare first French translation of the adaptation of Orme's work by Archenholtz (1st German 1786-1788) by L.-F. König, revised by the Swiss J. Lanteires (1756-1797). The work is a history of the English colonisation of India with information on the country (ancient history, geography, culture, inhabitants...). Orme (1728-1801) entered the British East India Company in Bengal in 1743 and was a Member of the Council at Fort St George in Madras between 1754 and 1758. In 1760, he returned to England and was appointed as historiographer to the British East India Company in 1769. Archenholtz (1741?-1812) was a Prussian officer, publicist and professor of History, he wrote many historical works, i.a. about the Seven Year's Wars which was often reprinted.
