III, occ. marg. stains, some ff. sl. browned, ink stains on pp. 5-6 of vol. I and pp. 228-229 & 256 in vol. III, wormtracks in some lower margins of vol. I, repaired on pp. 159-164, sl. cut short, no margins at front., very occ. ms. notes).
19th-c. half green sheep, marbled paper boards, gilt-orn. flat spines, marbled edges (rubbed, spines faded, front joint of vol. I split with leather loosening, wormholes in lower joint of vol. I).
Third edition (1st 1550) of this famous work of the Italian painter, writer and architect G. Vasari (1511-1574) containing his many famous biographies of Italian artists. Illustrated with a frontispiece and 149 woodcut medallion portraits within architectural frames (and 6 medallions left empty). Vasari is considered to be the first art historian and initiator of the encyclopedic genre of artistic biographies. Printer's mark at end of volumes II and III.
