Lge folio; engr. title and 30 pl. (foxing).
Contemp. three-quarter brown shagreen, marbled paper covers, gilt-ruled spine with raised bands (leather very rubbed, front joint part. split).
Impressive work published in 10 instalments (cf. table at the beginning). 1st impression of the 61 beautiful lithographs on tinted background by François Stroobant: illustrated title, 30 large headpieces and 30 plates picturing views, often animated, of sites and monuments of Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho, Ascalon, Tiberias, etc.; furthermore, vignette in-text representing the arms of Jerusalem. This work is a translation of "The Holy Land [...], with historical descriptions by the Rev. G. Croly". The Scottish painter and traveller D. Roberts (1796-1864) is particularly renowned for his watercolours representing daily life in the Middle East and especially in Egypt.
