Lot description
Copperplate, 12,9 x 8,3 cm, at top "Affliction demande consolation.", at bottom "Cath: Ther: Lecomte 1708".
Good condition. Very interesting plate.
The coat of arms and inscription refer to Catherine Thérèse Le Comte d'Orville (d. after 1731), an Ursuline at Brussels and part of a noble family. Her sister Jeanne Isabelle (1683-1752) was married to François Philippe van Spoelberch (1676-1751). An engraving after Peter Paul Rubens's "Education of the Virgin" in Antwerp (KMSKA, inv. 306) is dedicated to another family member (London, British Museum, inv. 1891,0414.828). The Madonna sculpture on our copperplate might be a reference to Our Lady of the Sablon, which was close to the cloister of the Ursulines.
