19th-c. vellum, flat spine, mod. endpapers (soiled, lower cover renewed, sl. warping). Good copy.
First Dutch edition (1st London 1666-7) of the chief work by Rycaut (1629-1700), an important and influential analysis of the structure of Ottoman government and society, in 3 parts: state, religion and warfare. Engr. ills: 20 nice half-page pls with French captions, coming from the French trsl. (Paris 1670), showing Sultan Mehmed IV in his state rooms, Ottoman political and religious headmen in their costume, also soldiers (i.a. janissaries, spahis), court dwarfs and mutes, harem slaves, and a turban. Rycaut went to Constantinople in 1661 as private secretary to the ambassador Heneage Finch, Earl of Winchelsea, and to Smyrna as consul of the Levant Company in 1668. Woodcut mark on title.
