First edition of the translation by J.B. Eyriès (1st Engl. ed.: London, 1798) who reorganised the book and shortened the nautical details. Ed. certified by the publisher's engr. signature. Complete with the plates figuring natives and plans of some Pacific islands, Japanese coasts, Korean ports, etc., and with some pp. of Insu island, Likeujo and Korean vocabulary. Sent to the north-west coast of America to meet Captain George Vancouver, Broughton (1762-1821) arrived in North Pacific (Japan, Korea, Kuril Islands) after a half-circumnavigation (England, Rio de Janeiro, Australia, Tahiti & Hawaii) and penetrated further than La Pérouse. Exploring the Bering Sea islands, he continued on the American coast, went to California and recrossed the Pacific to Japan before returning to England. Ref. Sabin 8424. - Chadenat 4220.
