Lot description
3 vol., folio: engr. title-[38]-768-[71], engr. title-[12]-623-[55], engr. title-[10]-634-[42] pp. (folding map lacking, occasionally light foxing, very light marginal dampstains, rare stains, tear without loss strengthened in p. 243 of vol. I, marginal tears with loss at the end of vol. II). Good condition, some pp. very fresh.
Cont. binding: vellum (vol. II limp), flat spines (vol. II ink titled), sprinkled edges (except vol. II) (wormholes, head of vol. I strengthened, two small lacks of vellum to vol. II).
Second and best edition, corrected and augmented by Barcia, published in reality in 1725 ? (cfr the preface of vol. I dated of 20 January 1725). Important work on Ancient Mexico written by the Spanish friar de Torquemada, dealing with the history of the country before the conquest, the conquest itself and the Spanish ecclesiastical affaires in the New World. It also describes the religion, laws and customs of Mexicans. Illustrated with 3 engr. titles by Irala. The first edition was published in Sevilla in 1715 but most copies were lost in a shipwreck.
