Lot description

Folio: [16 incl. front.]-484-[36] pp.; 45 pl. (one leaf of prelim. quire é missing (according to collation STCV, but not accord. to the digitised UGent copy which has the same prelims); some corners of blank margins torn of, a single one underlaid, some browning and spotting, some min. dampstaining on first quires).

Contemp. sheep over wood, gilt orn. spine with 5 raised bands, red edges (covers rubbed, missing leather of lower corner, joints and bands rubbed and sl. def.).

First part only of this history of the spread of Catholicism in Asia, America and Africa, and a survey of the situation in 17th-c. Europe, written by the Jesuit polemical author Hazart (Oudenaarde 1617 - Antwerp 1690). Part I deals with Japan, China, Peru, Mexico, Brazil, Florida, Canada etc.. Ill. with an engr. title and 45 full-page engr. pl. by Lommelin after Abraham van Diepenbeke. Title in red & black. Printed in 2 col.
