Lot description
Folio: [28]-1/163-[4]-164/392 [= 396] ff. (title underlaid, dampstaining throughout, foxing, extensive on some ff., sm. marginal hole in f. [2], some soiling, ff. 60-61 browned and ff. 76-77 sl. toned, occ. tears without losses, wormholes in ff. 389-392 with text repaired by hand on ff. 390-392).
Contemp. vellum, flat spine, blue edges.
First Sansovino edition of Dante and the first to print the commentaries of Landino and Vellutello together. First so-called "gran naso" edition because of the medallion portrait of Dante within elaborate scrollwork frame with winged figures (not signed "AB" as in some copies) on title after Vasari (?), illustrated also with 96 nice woodcuts in the text (incl. 12 repeats) from the blocks cut for Francesco Marcolini's edition of 1544, historiated initials and Sessa's cat and mouse device on last page. Text in italic in 1 column framed by the extensive commentary in 2 col. in roman. The names of the commentators are printed in the margins.
