Known as one of the most skilled painters of the Dutch rococo and classicist landscape, La Fargue (1729-1782) was in high demand with the Dutch urban aristocracy in The Hague. He was strongly influenced by Ruisdael, whose works he occasionally copied. This southern landscape is somewhat comparable to "Meadow with milked cows", now in the Rijksmuseum collection (RP-T-1959-83).
