A young man is looting fallen soldiers in the aftermath of a battle. Dirk Langendyck (1748-1805) was a Dutch painter from Rotterdam who had specialised in battle scenes and military themes. While many of his drawings and paintings are dynamic and vibrant cavalry battles, this sheet is a good example of his smaller and more anecdotal renditions.
Prov. Albert van Loock (coll. stamp on verso, Lugt 1752).
