Lot description

4to: [8]-712-[7- 1 bl.] pp. (pp. 502-03 sl. soiled).

Old sheep (sl. rubbed, an occ. tear), gilt orn. spine with 5 raised bands (joints rubbed), gilt sides, red edges. Good copy.

Dutch trsl. and adaptation of the famous centennial memorial volume "Imago primi saeculi", with special attention to the role of the Jesuits in the Low Countries. The Latin work was largely conceived by Joannes Bollandus (1596-1665). The Dutch prose was the work of L. Uwens; the verses are, for the larger part, written by A. Poirters. Engr. ill.: allegorical title by M. Natalis after A. van Diepenbeeck, 103 emblems by C. Galle within varying borders, each one with a caption in Latin & Dutch, and 1 full-page emblematical ill. (p. 702). Cancellans pl. pasted at p. 400. One of the better emblem books of the Low Countries.
