Lot description

Latin manuscript on paper, c. 19 x 15 cm : [109] ff. + 2 ff. loosely inserted, occ. additions pasted on, written in black ink, four-line red musical staves, rubricated throughout.

Cont. blind-decorated calf over wood (sl. rubbed, front endpaper lifted and partly gone, lower flyleaf torn out), edges bevelled inside, covers with roll-stamp border and rectangular or lozenge-shaped triple ruled frames, gilt spine on 4 raised bands with red label (head def.). In good condition (minor traces of use).

Interesting liturgical music manuscript from a Dutch-language female Franciscan (?) convent in the Southern Netherlands (Flanders?): Dutch insertions and marginalia (i.a. “om als me(n) de voete(n) wast”, “helich sacrament”, “als men een dochter cleet”, “als een religieuse haer iubilee doet”), Franciscan saints (“De sancto francisco”, "De s. clara”), Flemish saints (Adrianus, Gislenus, Leuinus, Rochus). Decoration made from 12 cut out gilt borders and gilt initials from an earlier manuscript (Book of Hours?) pasted on. Engraving by A. van Merlen bound with, showing St Ignatius Loyola and St Franciscus Xaverius. Prov. Dutch ownership entry on front flyleaf: “desen boek behoort toe suster ... (erased) ... Suster Angelina Baltijn”.
