Engraving, 48 x 34,7 cm, laid paper with watermark (grapes, similar to Heawood 2361), signed in plate at lower edge "Ant. van Dyck pinxit / Paulus Pontius sculpsit" (trimmed to the platemark with thread margin, sm. tear of 1 cm at lower edge).

Impressive portrait in a very good dark impression, rich in contrast, of the 4th state (of 5).

Prov. George Usslaub (1848-1929), French harbor official and print collector (stamp on verso, Lugt 1221).
Joined, 4 prints after Van Dyck: 1. Pontius, Paulus - Portrait of Jan van Malderus, seated half-length to right. Etching, 26,5 x 20 cm, laid paper with watermark (VD), unsigned. Early state (before text) of etching after Hollar.-- 2-3. Lombard, Pierre - Portraits of Philips, count of Pembroke, and Lucia, Countess of Carlisle. Ferdinand Elle, Louis - Portrait of Mary Ruthven or Princess Mary. Etching, 19,5 x 14,5 cm, laid paper, signed in plate "L. Ferdinand fecit" (laid down on paper support).
