Lot description

6 etchings, various sizes 17,5 x 22 cm (largest) and 17 x 10 cm (smallest), laid paper, signed in plate at lower right "Ernest George.", numbered at upper right.

By Sir Ernest George, an eminent 19th-century architect who was highly respected for his original etchings and watercolours. E. George studied art and architecture at the Royal Academy Schools, London, and created his first set of etchings in 1873 ("Etchings on the Moselle"). During the following years he etched and painted many fine architectural views in France, Holland, Belgium, Germany and Italy. Ghent was one of his most favoured cities; he completed over 20 etchings and at least as many watercolours of its buildings, churches, squares and waterways. Our collection includes views of the Belfry, Gravensteen, "Het Torrentje", St Nicolas church, etc.
Joined: 1. Bouwens, Jan - Het Torentje. Etching, 30,5 x 20,7 cm, wove paper, signed with monogram"JB" at lower left corner. -- 2. Meunier, Louis - "Veue de la grande fontaine d'arangouesse". France, 1660. Engraving, 13 x 25 cm, laid paper, unsigned. Prov. Polycarpe Charles Séchan (1803-1874), stamp Lugt 2342. Nice view of Aranguez.-- 3-22. Weirotter, Franz Edmund - 20 small landscape etchings on 4 sheets of laid paper. Later impressions. Some signed in the plate " F.E. Weirotter fecit".-- 23. Ribault, Jean-François. After Louis Ducis - Van Dyck and his mistress. Etching and engraving, 41 x 23 cm, vellum paper, signed in the plate at lower edge "Commencé par J.-F. Ribault". (29 pcs).
