Lot description

8vo: xx-564-14-2 pp.; 16 pl. (front. missing, marg. unobtrusive worming to the 15 first pp., upper margin faintly dampstained throughout, plates somewhat clumsily folded).

Modern quarter calf, gilt orn. spine with 5 raised bands, red leather title label, untrimmed. Good copy, probably in its first binding.

New edition (1st 1789) of this astronomical handbook by G. Adams (1750-1795), English optician and writer, mathematical instrument maker to George III of England. Complete with 16 folding engr. plates representing diagrams, astronomical phenomena, orreries (planetaria), a pair of globes and other scientific instruments. Final section contains "A catalogue of optical, mathematical and philosophical instruments, made and sold by W. and S. Jones" and 1 f. relating to the stock and copyright of the late G. Adams, purchased by Jones.
