Lot description

80 photos (sl. faded), mostly 8,5 x 11,5 cm or 22 x 28 cm, pasted in, ms. captions underneath.

Contemp. shagreen with corners (rubbed), cloth on covers, flat spine, decor. endpapers.

Album of a honeymoon to Palestine with photos probably taken by the couple themselves and supplemented with some larger photographs by i.a. Bonfils. A journey starting at Port Said and going to Jaffa, Jerusalem, Judea and Bethlehem. Jerusalem: Howard's Hotel, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre with the Franciscan Chapel of the Apparition, the Chapel of St Helena and the Greek Orthodox chapel; the Via Dolorosa, Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount, the Golden Gate, Dome of the Chain, the Ayyubid Mosque of Omar, the Wailing Wall, Calvary, the Valley of Josaphat, the Tomb of the Virgin Mary, old olive trees, Bethany; the route from Jerusalem to Jericho, Jordan Hotel, the Dead Sea, the Jordan River and Valley, Rachel's Tomb; a couple of animated scenes in Bethlehem and the hills of Ein Karem. Among the larger prints a couple by Félix Bonfils (1831-1891), French photographer active in the Middle East and one of the first commercial photographers to produce images of the Middle East on a large scale and by the Brothers Zangaki: (probably named) George and Constantinos Zangakis, active in Egypt and Algeria from 1870 to 1880 who specialised in photographing ancient monuments and scenes of everyday life.
