Very rare collection of plates around the theme of the Great Turkish War (1683-1699), a series of conflicts between the Ottoman Empire and the Holy League consisting of the Habsburg Monarchy, Poland-Lithuania, Venice and Russia. The atlas is always published without title-page!
According to van der Krogt, there are 2 editions, each with 2 variants and up to 8 series of prints (named A to F, with D divided into 3 separate series). Usually the title "Korte beschryvinghe, ende aenwysinghe der plaetsen in desen boeck, naar hunnen tegenwoordighen standt, pertinentelyck uyt-ghebeeldt" of the 12 pp. Dutch text (or the French counterpart: "Briefve Description, et Demonstration Des Places Et Villes") is preceded by a dedication plate and 2 series, 22 pl. in total, with 11 equestrian portraits (series A) and 10 prints on the Siege of Vienna after Romeyn de Hoogh (series B). All series were intended to sell separately, so it should not surprise that the remaining copies have a very different structure and that this one does not include series A and B.
This copy, however, consists of the 5 subsequent series of prints that follow the letterpress text, these are: 1. 63 views of fortified towns in Austria and Hungary by Gaspar Bouttats (van der Krogt's complete series C), incl. Jacobus Peeters' "Belegeringe en onset der stadt Weenen" and prints of Budapest, Bratislava, Belgrado, the Esseker Bridge, Graz, Santa Maura, Constantinople, Hellespont, etc. - Three complete sets of Mediterranean views after Jan Peeters, etched by Lucas Vorsterman I and Conrad Lauwers, these are: 2. "Diverse viste delle cità in Candia, Malta come nell'Archipelago." 11 pl. (series D1). 3. "Diverse viste delli Dardaneli del' Strecio come delle Città nel Arcipelago." 10 pl. (series D2) - 4. "Diverse viste delli luoghi e contrade di Barbaria e il Stretto di Gibraltar". 11 pl. (series D3) - 5. 13 views of biblical places after drawings by Jan Peeters, etched by Gaspar Bouttats (the complete series E). The Balkan towns by Jacques Harrewijn are, as usual, not present (series F).
