Also known as the Château des Comtes de Marchin, a castle near the village of Modave in the province of Liège. The oldest part of the building, the donjon, was built on a strategic rock high above the valley of the river Hoyoux. The oldest parts date probably from the 13th century and were erected by the lords of Modave. In the 16th c. the castle and estate became the property of the Haultepenne and de Saint-Fontaine families. During the 17th c. the castle was turned into a luxury Baroque residence. Later owners were: Maximilian Henry of Bavaria, Cardinal William Egon of Furstenberg, Baron Arnold de Ville and Anne-Léon, Duke of Montmorency. In the 19th c. it was owned by non-noble families until the Compagnie Intercommunale Bruxelloise des Eaux bought the property in March 1941. It has been restored with great care and is open for visitors.
