Drawing, pen and black ink with grey wash, framing line in black ink, 34,6 x 30,8 cm, laid paper, unsigned (dampstain at lower right corner, some brown stains, large vertical folding line at right centre).
Mounted on thick paper.
Interesting design for a decorative frame or chimney piece with elaborate sculptural figures of satyrs, masks, cornucopiae and garlands. The style of ornament is reminiscent of that of the so-called first Fontainebleau school and recalls the large sculptural decorations designed by Primaticcio and Rosso Fiorentino for the main Gallery of the Palace of François I at Fontainebleau between 1530 and 1540.
Ref. Zerner 1969.
Joined: After Battista Pittoni - Ornament frieze with two large acanthus scrolls and playing putti. Ca. 1540-1580. Drawing, pen and brown ink, traces of graphite, 10,6 x 22,5 cm, laid paper with partial Italian watermark (possibly Briquet 12212), unsigned (trimmed at lower edge, some brown stains, sm. tear with loss of paper at lower left and upper right corner).
