Dutch translation by Matthys van der Haage of "A treatise on the theory and practice of midwifery" (first 1752) by Smellie (1697-1763), leading obstetrician in London. Ill. with 42 (of 43) numb. folding engr. plates (n. I-XXXIX, I*, III*, XXXVI* and XXXVII*; XXXIII missing) by F. de Bakker. He was first to teach obstetrics and midwifery on a scientific base, to separate obstetrics from surgery and the first to lay down safe rules for the use of obstetrical forceps. "Smellie contributed more to the fundamentals of obstetrics than virtually any individual" (Garrison & Morton).
