Beschrijving lot

2 vol., 4to oblong; 2 titles and 189 pl. (occ. foxing, ff. 112-114 detached, pl. n. 196 in vol. I and n. 108 in vol. II detached).

Contemp. half red shagreen, covers of red buckram blind & gilt ruled, gilt orn. spines with raised bands, a.e.g. (sl. rubbed, front cover of vol. I). In a mod. slipcase.

First edition of the text by De Cloet (Bruges 1790-Freyr 1855) after the success of his "Voyage pittoresque" (1825). First issue of the 189 (of 205) plates nicely hand-coloured and partly heightened with gum arabic published in 34 issues between 1825 and 1830. Plates by Madou, Kreins, De Pellaert, Pringret, General von der Howen, A. de Marbaix, Lemaître... figuring many castles in Belgium, Netherlands (and also some views of Luxembourg), sometimes with the owner's name, monuments, churches, abbeys, landscapes... The 2 lithogr. titles present.
