Large folio: [4 incl. title]-47-[1] pp. with 2 preliminary and trailing blanks; 24 pl. (a few small spots on the blanks).
Contemp. half calf, marbled paper boards, gilt orn. spine (expertly rebacked, rubbed corners).
Original edition complete with 24 aquatinted and hand-coloured plates, with descriptions of each plate in English and French, after drawings by the German-Italian orientalist artist Luigi Mayer (1755-1803). Mayer was the most accurate artist making drawings of the Near East before the Orientalist painter David Roberts. Includes colourful views of Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Bethany, and representations of biblical places: the pool of Bethesda, the fountain of Siloam, the sepulchre of the Judges of Israel, the tomb of Absalom, etc.
