Oil on canvas, 83 x 112 cm with frame, 59 x 88 cm canvas only, unsigned (relined canvas, some paint loss at centre affecting the image, several later retouches, some minor cracks in varnish).

Under contemp. gilt wooden frame. (occ. woodworm holes, sl. def. at edges).

A winged Mercury is hovering over eight women caressing a newborn child. At the right side two goats can be seen. Mercury was ordered to deliver the young Bacchus to the river nymphs by whom he was raised.
