27 engravings (of 28 : lacking pl. 28), 18,2 x 21,4 cm, laid paper 30 x 35,5 cm; engr. numbers and Latin captions (marg. damp stain affecting title and some other pl., margins sl. foxing, marg. tears reinforced to pl. 26, folds to pl. 26 & 27).
Bound in 1 vol., 30,5 x 36,5 cm, contemp. calf (corners rounded, damp stain on upper cover), gilt orn. spine on 6 raised bands (head and tail defect.), red leather label, spr. edges. Good copy.
With the address of Bonenfant. Includes a title, a portrait of Augustinus and 25 plates engraved by S.A. Bolswert except pl. 21 & 23 by C. Galle. Each engraving with a contemp. explanatory French ms. leaf pasted in the left margin. Commissioned by G. Maigret (1573-1633), Augustinian theologian and superior of the "Provincia Belgica" of his Order at the time. "The Augustinian series of Bolswert and Galle exerted tremendous influence around the world. In the Americas it served as a model for several series on the life of Saint Augustine" (Pessca).
