First edition of this travel account in 2 volumes by the French engineer Garnier (1839-1904). The first volume, describing the eastern coast of New Caledonia, includes a map of the island and of the penal colony on Île Nou by Malte-Brun, as well as the frontispiece "Halte dans la Brousse" after L. Breton. The second volume, a study of Tahiti and the surrounding islands, includes a map on Tahiti and Moorea. Garnier was a young mineral explorer sent to Nouméa as head of the mines department of New Caledonia in 1863, where he discovered a new green nickel ore, which was named Garnierite in his honor.
