Second enlarged edition (1st ed.: Leiden, 1737, 15 pls) of one of the most famous Dutch books on the planning and cultivation of country gardens, concerning notably fruit- and kitchen-gardens and also greenhouses for the cultivation of pineapples, lemons, oranges and other (sub)tropical fruits. Complete with 16 engr. pls by J. Wanderlaar, J.C. Philips, J. Van der Spyk and F. Van Bleyswyck: plans of gardens, greenhouses, and botanical figures. Son of economist Pieter De La Court (1618-1685) and Catharina Van der Voort, the author (1664-1739) was a wealthy Leiden cloth merchant, art collector and connoisseur of gardening. He gives in this book all the secrets of gardens, vegetables (forced cultivation), orchards (and special fruits culture), vines and flowers but also manures and greenhouses (he was the first to grow pineapples in the Netherlands).
