Folio: title-[18]-400-[5] pp.; 181 (of 182) hand-coloured maps mounted on mod. tabs (map "Marchionatus Sacri Romani Imperii" missing; title cut out and mounted on, map of North-Scotland pasted in, sm. hole in left side of the map of Lorraine, sm. marg. loss to the maps of Aragon, Liège, Hesse and 3 partial maps of Holland, very light marg. water stain and light trace of stamp in introduction, some light folds, some margins reinforced or restored, sl. browned throughout).
Mod. half brown shagreen, marbled paper boards, spine with raised bands (tail sl. faded).
First Dutch edition of the new "Mercator-Hondius-Janssonius" atlas (1st French ed. 1633, 1st Amsterdam ed. by J. Hondius 1606, 1st Duisburg ed. by Mercator's heirs 1595), enlarged with maps from the "Appendices" and "Theatrum" editions. Composed of a hand-coloured architectural title, heightened with gold, the double portrait of Mercator and Hondius, and 181 old hand-coloured maps, except some maps on heavy paper with a later colouring. Divided in 7 parts: 1. World, Northern and Eastern Europe, 2. Spain and Portugal, 3. France and Switzerland, 4. The Netherlands, 5. Germany, 6. Italy and Southeastern Europe and 7. Africa, Asia and America. It includes a world map ("Nova totius terrarum Orbis geographica ac hydrographica tabula"), a polar map, 4 continental maps (Europe, Africa, Asia, America), 13 maps on the British Isles, 27 on France, 30 on the Low Countries, 4 on Africa, 8 on Asia, 10 on America, etc.

Prov. Gifted by Philipp Wilhelm of Neuburg (1615-1690), Elector Palatine to the Jesuit college in Düsseldorf on March 1, 1636. Philipp Wilhelm received a Jesuit-influenced education and spent considerable time in Düsseldorf as a child (ex dono on title).
