Contemp. marbled calf, gilt-orn. spines with raised bands, red edges (some sl. traces of use, lower joint of vol. II splitting).
First edition of this important work by the French physician, botanist and agronomist Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782) describing c. 1000 species of French and exotic trees according to name of the botanist J. Pitton de Tournefort. Illustrated with 4 fold. plates fig. machines (olive oil press, furnaces for the salts used to make soap...), 250 plates figuring trees and numerous headpieces showing fruits and flower trees, entire or cut. This work is part of the "Traité des forêts" published from 1754 in 6 volumes.
