Contemp. red morocco, gilt-orn. covers with coat of arms, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands and title label, a.e.g. (covers rubbed and scratched, spine rubbed with def.).
First edition of this overview of historic architecture by the Viennese Baroque architect J. B. Fischer von Erlach (1656-1723), dedicated to Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI (1685-1740). The 93 large numb. pl. are accompanied by German and French texts. Book 1 incl. Judea, Egypt, Syria, Persia and Greece (Solomon's Temple, pyramids, Colossus of Rhodes, antique temples, etc.). Book 2 deals with Rome (triumphal archs, bridges, palaces, etc.), but also incl. other constructions such as Stonehenge. Book 3 contains Islamic and Asian buildings (Hagia Sophia, Mecca, China, etc.). Book 4 focuses on designs by the author, some built in Vienna and Salzburg (palaces, churches, etc.). Book 5 incl. antique and Baroque vases.
