Contemp. three-quarter sheep, pink marbled paper covers, gilt-ruled flat spine, spr. edges (very rubbed, wormtrack to lower joint).
First edition of the translation with the printed publisher's signature. Book written by W. Vaughan after Woodard told him about his captivity to the Malays (Introduction p. 4), completed with an ethnological and geographical description of the Celebes based on questions Vaughan asked to the survivors of the expedition, a vocabulary of the Malay language (pp. 178-184), accounts of shipwrecked sailors (incl. the mutiny of the Bounty by his commander William Bligh) and captivity on land or natural disasters. The aim of Vaughan with that work was to show that, whatever the circumstances, a man is capable of surviving and adapting. Illustrated with Woodard's portrait in frontispiece, 2 fold. maps of the Celebes and 1 fold. plate fig. "proas" (ships) and Malay weapons.
Ref. Not in Chadenat.
