Group portrait shot during the Colonial World Fair in Amsterdam, 1883, where 28 native Surinamese were put to display in a circus tent. This portrait showing men, women and children accompanied by a European man with black top hat, was shot in a studio with the intention to arouse interest in Suriname among Dutch private individuals "by showing something from the colony in the ethnological field that had never before been seen in Europe". A reproduction of this particular photograph is to be found in the publication of Prince Roland Bonaparte "Les habitants de Suriname; Notes recueillies à l'exposition coloniale d'Amsterdam en 1883" (Paris, A. Quantin, 1884) and available via Gallica. On the introductory pages this photograph is numbered 1 with explication: "Aborigines of vroegste Bewoners van Suriname, bestaande uit Arowaken en Caraïben Indianen".
