Contemp. mottled sheep, covers with double gilt-ruled border and gilt fillet frame with corner pieces, gilt-orn. spines with raised bands, marbled edges (head and tail of vol. 1 damaged and partly missing, joints and boards sl. rubbed, corners sl. bumped). Large paper copy.
Enlarged and best edition of this great history of the Dutch Revolt. Complete with 4 ident. engr. front. by A. Blooteling after W. Schellinks and 80 engr. plates (25, 20, 14, 21): 41 portraits depicting the author (4 ident. pl. by A. Zylveldt after F. Hals), Philip II, William II, the Duke of Alva, Alexander Farnese, J. van Oldenbarneveldt, Henri IV of France, Queen Elizabeth of England, Albert & Isabella, Philip III etc. and 39 double-page engr. bird's-eye views and battle scenes (some signed by Jan Luyken; 1 by Gilliam vander Gouwen showing a stranded whale, not mentioned in the list of plates). Title in red and black.
