Beschrijving lot

Sm. folio: [58] ff. (sl. marg. damp stain to upper corners in begin., one single marg. wormhole, sl. marg. browning in quire O).

18th-c. marbled sheep, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands, red edges (sl. rubbed, scratching, front joint part. split, lack of leather to tail). In very good condition.

First French translation of the original Latin text of Grapheus (1487-1558), town secretary of Antwerp. This is one of the great Antwerp Renaissance books, showing the magnificent way in which the capital of the Low Countries welcomed the future King Philip of Spain. Illustrated with 29 woodcuts (in-text, full-page or double-page) showing triumphal arches, erected by the foreign workers resident in Antwerp and theatrical decors after designs by Pieter Coecke van Aelst. Title and last page within different Renaissance borders.
