Black, white and beige chalk, 38,9 x 31,9 cm, grey wove paper, signed, titled and located "Dr. Broekhuizen - Transvaal / Willy Sluiter", label "727" (few holes, few spots, corner missing).
Hinged at upper edges, under passe-partout.
Accomplished portrait by the Dutch Willy Sluiter (1873-1949), made in Transvaal in present-day South Africa. Dr. Herman Dirk van Broekhuizen (1871-1953) was a South African minister of the Dutch Reformed Church who got involved in the Second Boer War and married Elsie Elsoff, the granddaughter of Paul Kruger. Van Broekhuizen later became a member of parliament and a campaigner for an Afrikaans-speaking university in Pretoria. When he was young, he also played for the national rugby team.
