French translation by the orientalist Langlès and revised by the naturalist Lamarck of the travel account by Thunberg. He travelled from the Netherlands along the Cape of Good Hope to Japan, almost unknown at that time. It contains detailed information (on trade, inhabitants, languages, religion, morals, etc.) of South Africa, Japan and Java. Illustrated with the author's portrait in front., 28 plates (some fold.) depicting i.a. jewelry of the Hottentot, fauna and flora of Japan, Buddha, etc., and one headpiece. Nicknamed the "Japanese Linnaeus", Thunberg worked as surgeon in Nagasaki for the VOC. The first edition in Swedish was published in 1788-1793.
