Engraving, 28,8 x 21,1 cm, laid paper, signed "Matth. Quadus chalcogr.", Latin text (trimmed on platemark, light foxing, few sm. tears and edges strengthened).
Good impression. Rare broadsheet.
Fascinating and complex broadsheet with an allegory of the fate of Flanders. A woman is suckling 2 wolves and is crowned by the devil. Surrounding this scene are 12 city gates of Ghent, Bruges, etc. The print is based on a prophecy of the Bruges abbot Lubert Hautscilt (1347-1417). A version with additional letterpress text was published by Johannes Janssonius in 1604 and can be found in Amsterdam (Rijksmuseum, inv. RP-P-OB-78.337) and Nuremberg (Germanisches Nationalmuseum, inv. HB312).
