Contemp. mottled calf, gilt-ruled covers with fillets and roll-stamps and with a frame of darker marbled calf orn. with gilt fleurons, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands, double gilt fillet on edges, gilt inside dentelles, gilt edges (rubbed, two wormholes on spine). Wide-margined copy in a nice inside condition.

Neat typography of the Greek text and the Latin translation of the work "On the sublime", one of the most important ancient Greek aesthetic treatises on literary criticism, attributed for a long time to Longinus. With the preface to Pius VI "supprimée dans beaucoup d'exemplaires" (Brunet). Issued to 115 copies, of which 15 on vellum paper and 15 "en papier fin", this copy on strong laid paper.
