First edition of this comparative survey of ancient and modern architecture. Second issue of the plates on double-pages: engr. title with a frame depicting monuments with in the corners a medal showing an Allegory of the continents and 90 plates representing Roman, Greek & Egyptian temples, Gothic churches, barracks, arsenals & jails, ancient theatres, French castles from the reign of François I, a project for the completion of the Louvre by Bernini in 1665, the Palace of Versailles, columns for the Doric, Ionic & Corinthian orders, etc. With a table of the monuments composing the work also engr. on double-page. By the French architect J.-N.-L. Durand (1760-1834), Professor of architecture at the École Polytechnique in 1795 and important figure of Neoclassicism.
