Oblong sm. 8vo: [8, engr. title and dedication incl.]-315 [= 317]-[1] pp. (foxing, 1st ff. loose, cancel on title of p. 106).
Contemp. marbled sheep, boards decorated with gilt angular fleurons, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands, red edges (front cover detached, rubbed).
Rare first and unique edition, posthumously published, of a work on hoplomachy, or fighting in heavy armour, divided in 3 parts and dealing with the use of pike, halberd and musket. Ill. with 57 copper-engr. by Fr. Bertelli according to Brunet: an engr. title, 2 portraits (dedicatee Sir Kenelm George Digby and the author) and 54 full-page ill. in orn. frame showing various moves. By Pistofilo (1465/1470-1533), humanist, Secretary and Councelor to the Alfonso d'Este, Duke of Ferrara.
