Mezzotint, 51,4 x 63,4 cm, wove paper with unidentified watermark, signed "B. West Pinxit", "V. Green Mezzotint Engraver to his Majesty fecit" (margins strengthened, sl. spotted and toned).
Early print after B. West's neo-classical history painting from 1772, commissioned by George III to hang in his "Warm Room", figuring the death of Pierre Terrail, Chevalier de Bayard, who served 3 French Kings and was shot with an arquebus on 30 April 1524. Bayard with his romantic heroism was considered the epitome of chivalry.
