Interesting military map of western Russia, Ukraine, and the Baltics, drawn by order of Henri Clarke, marshal of France, prior to Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812. N.-A. Sanson, the director of the topographic service that took part in the campaign, possibly based his map upon a Russian example, e.g. the "Carte de la partie européenne de l'empire de Russie, avec l'indication des chemins de poste [...]" (St. Petersburg, Depôt impérial des cartes, 1809), or the Parisian copy by H. Langlois (from the same year) and therefore gave it the misleading title "postal road map". Captured during the retreat, Sanson was only finally released after Napoleon's abdication in 1814 and allowed to return to France.
