Broadsheet, ca. 95 x 57 cm, printed on fabric (sl. browned, min. staining at edges, 1 tiny def. at bottom, coat of arms faded).

Framed (not studied outside frame), under glass. Good condition.

Unique early luxury thesis print announcing the public defending of the bachelor's thesis in Philosophy by Antoon de Bryarde, one of the 10 children of Chevalier Jacob de Bryarde (1578-1652), high bailiff of Veurne and lord of Beauvoorde (Wulveringem, Veurne). At the Faculty of Arts, Paedagogium Castrense ("De Burcht") of Leuven University, on August 26, 1634, at 9 am and 3 pm, and presided by Mathieu Moituyer from Walcourt, professor primarius of Philosophy. Text printed on fabric, within decorative frame. 2 Neo-Latin poems: 1. Preliminary text in honour of his father, Jacob de Bryarde: "Nobilissimo ac amplissimo domino D. Iacobo de Bryarde equiti aurato, toparchae in Beauvoorde celeberrimae civitatis furnensis", from "vester observantissimus filius Antonius de Bryarde". - 2. Long poem on Philosophy in 3 col.: Logica, Physica, Metaphysica. According to the registers of the Old Leuven University, "Antonius De Briart" from Veurne was inscribed as a student December 1st, 1632. Sheet beautifully decorated with 8 large painted and hand-coloured flowers on the sides, i.a. tulips and roses. At top, a large painted and hand-coloured coat of arms of the family de Bryarde, showing 3 blue horns on a white background with stag rampant on top, flanked by 2 wolves. The family de Bryarde, one of the most influential families of the region, owned Beauvoorde Castle (Wulveringem) until 1838. In 1584, during the early part of the Eighty Years' War, the original medieval mansion was burned down by bandits. It was Jacob de Bryarde, the father of our student, who ordered to rebuild the castle in Renaissance style in the early 17th century, by Sylvain Boullain, the architect of the Archdukes Albert and Isabella. Our broadsheet is printed by Trijn Jansdr., widow of the Leiden born Leuven University printer Henricus Hastenus (ca. 1561-1629). She continued the printing firm until ca. 1639. The misprinted first "e" in the name "de Bryaerde", 2 times ms. erased with black ink.
