4to: [16 incl. engr. title]-372-[7-1]-xxxvii-[2-1 bl.-11-1 bl.] pp.; 101 pl. (margins engr. title underl., tear in *2, some tears in other margins, sometimes underl., some dampstaining and spotting).
Contemp. sheep, gilt-orn. spine with 4 raised bands, red edges (corners rubbed and partly restored, covers and spine rubbed, rebacked spine, renewed endpapers).
Re-issue of the original 1602 ed. of the Dutch version of "Veridicus Christianus" (1601), an impressive emblematic treatise by the Flemish Jesuit Jan David (1545-1613). With an additional treatise against all kinds of "dark" magic, countered by a curious device (with a volvelle) of Christian divination. Ill. with engr. title and 100 full-page engravings by Th. Galle with emblematic scenes within ornamental borders and subscriptions in 3 languages (Latin, Dutch, French) and scripts (roman, civilité, italic). These emblems have a rather macabre, grotesque touch and some even look surrealistic "avant la lettre". Another fine full-page engr. on x4r. Full-page engr. with (often missing) volvelle ("Soeckt, ende sult vinden") on Aa3r with the moving dial present (but loose). In Gothic type. A few texts in civilité. Engraved mark on part-title.
