Interesting ensemble of mostly rare topographical views, historical scenes, portraits of military generals and siege plans, related to the Belgian revolution and its aftermath in Antwerp. Special attention is paid to 2 Dutch commanders. The 1st, David Hendrik Chassé (1765-1849), bombarded the city of Antwerp as commander of Antwerp Citadel. The 2nd, Jan van Speyk (1802-1831), was a Dutch naval lieutenant commander who, rather than surrender his ship, ignited a fire in a powder keg in the ship's magazine with the legendary words "I'd rather be blown up then". The collection is a comprehensive visual testimony to a decisive period in the history of Antwerp, executed by Codoni, Th. Fourmois, Gihaut, P. Lauters, P. Simonau, Rottigni, Steyn, Tessaro, H. Ratinckx a.o.
