8vo, 2 parts: [front.-16]-398 (i.e. 392)-[9] pp.; 8 (of 10) pl. (missing pl.: the Outom-Chu tree and a hunting scene).
Contemp. three-quarter sheep, mottled paper covers (sm. tr. of use).
1st Dutch ed. (1st Fr.: 1696). Engr. ill.: frontispiece by J. Faber, 8 (of 10) pl. and 2 of them folding, by Casper Luyken, depicting the Chinese Emperor, his throne, astrolabes, the observatory of Peking, "Guyterij der Chinesche papen ontdekt", etc., and a folding plate of Chinese words. The folding map (p. 396) mentioned in the register was also not present in the copies we checked (Leiden, The Hague), and has rarely been preserved. The author, one of five Jesuit mathematicians sent to China by Louis XIV in 1685, maintained the Jesuit accommodation policy toward the Chinese rites and customs. With at the end a letter by Ferdinand Verbiest. Rare.
