The Victorian painter of Dutch origin Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912) settled in England in 1870. His friend and admirer Georg Ebers (1837-1898) was a German Egyptologist, Graecophile and novelist, as well as the author of one of the first monographs on Alma-Tadema (1886).
