18th-c. vellum, flat spine (sl. soiled). Good copy.
Early monograph on the history of law, compiled by G.C. Gebauer (Breslau 1690-1773), law professor at Leipzig and Göttingen. Ill. with 1 folding engr. of a page of the Florentine law manuscript. It deals with the Dutch law historian Hendrik Brenkman(n) or Brinkman (1681-1736) and his works on the textual history of the Corpus Iuris Civilis (esp. the old Florentine manuscript), and on the support given by the British diplomat Henry Newton (1651-1715) at the Tuscan court. Brenkman’s manuscripts were bought by Gebauer in 1743 and in 1773 bequeathed to Göttingen University Library. Engr. mark on title. Engr. arms of H. Newton (p. 203). Title in red & black. Ref.
